Climbing roses include some types of rosehip and varieties of garden roses that have long branched shoots. They are often used in decorating pavilions, walls, and buildings, as well as in creating decorative objects on plots. Caring for a climbing rose provides a set of various activities. The plant is considered quite capricious, so it requires attention.
Climbing Roses: Planting and Caring
It is important to choose the right place for planting. Climbing roses need sunlight in the morning. In the afternoon, the place should be shaded. It is not recommended to plant a rose near the corner of a building, as it may die due to drafts. Climbing roses do not endure northern winds well.
For planting, a strip of land of about 50 cm is enough. However, the nearest structure or plant should be located at least 0,5–1 m away.
Climbing Roses: Caring and Cultivation
Due to the kind’s peculiarities, the plant needs support. Caring for climbing roses implies the following activities:
- watering;
- extra fertilizing;
- pruning;
- preparing for winter.
The climbing rose is considered a drought-resistant plant, so it does not require frequent watering. As a rule, it is enough to water the plant once every 7–10 days, spending 10–20 liters of water per bush.
Young roses do not need fertilizing until the end of summer. For the preparation for the winter period, you will need a fertilizer containing potassium. In the second year, the plant needs mineral and organic compounds. The types of fertilizers must be alternated. From the subsequent year on, it is enough to apply only organic mixtures for climbing roses.
In autumn, you need to start preparing the plant for winter. If the temperature drops below -5, then the bush needs to be covered.
